The national semifinal tilt with Auburn was like the 15th round of a heavyweight fight with both teams landing bombs hoping to knock the other out. Virginia had stretches where their defense was terrific mixed with stretches where they couldn’t buy a bucket. The Cavaliers trailed by three at the half despite 13 points from Jerome but seemed to have the game locked up as the clock ticked down in the second half. Virginia held a 57-47 lead with 5:24 to go after a Jerome three-pointer but the offense vanished. The Cavaliers gave up a 14-0 run over the next 5:07 to trail by four with 17 seconds left. Guy hit a three with 7.4 seconds to play to make it a one-point game. After Jim Nantz jinxed Jared Harper at the free throw line as he was one of two, the Cavaliers trailed 62-60 with 6.5 seconds to go. Auburn used two fouls on the way up the court, the second of which overshadowed a potential double-dribble that was missed, to push them to six team fouls but more importantly, leave just 1.5 seconds to play. On the ensuing inbounds pass, Guy spotted up for a corner three again that was short but he was fouled. Replays showed him being bumped by Samir Doughty with 0.6 seconds to play: he calmly hit all three free throws to give the Cavaliers the lead and the win. Virginia was three of nine at the line prior to that. The Cavaliers shot 49 percent from the floor, including seven of 19 from three-point range, and held Auburn to nine of 31 from beyond the arc in the win. Jerome finished with 21 points, nine rebounds and six assists in the victory to lead Virginia.Sign in to PicksLogic to join the game on your favorite matchups.
